Abstract

Severe local storms are a part of the experience of every person who lives in the State of Kansas. Their disturbance ranges from a nighttime awakening caused by thunder and lightning display, to hail and tornado destruction of crop or home. The late Snowden Flora has written one book on hailstorms of the United States, and another on tornadoes of the United States, as a result of his many years of observing their activity in the State of Kansas. These storms have been the object of intensive research during the past few years. The Severe Local Storm Center established by the United States Weather Bureau in Kansas City, Missouri, devotes much time to the study of storms moving through Kansas.
