Abstract

The present paper concerns with the ultimate behavior of the simply-supported rectangular plates loaded biaxially in compression. The plates under consideration are part of columns, pontoons and deck structures of offshore platforms or double bottoms of ships.Existing simplified biaxial interactions are examined based on the results by the finite element nonlinear analysis. It is clarified that loading conditions employed in the previous researches result in an unsafe biaxial interaction.Several empirical formulas are newly presented for estimation of ultimate strength of rectangular plates.
