Abstract

In the present study, the biaxial behaviour of concrete and its mechanics under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions are analysed using the meso-model of concrete. A three-phase cubic meso-model is developed, which consists of mortar, interfacial transition zone, and aggregate. A finite element split Hopkinson pressure bar is developed for the biaxial dynamic loading. The mechanics of the crack pattern development in concrete under uniaxial and biaxial loading are investigated. The failure process and its mechanics for each loading condition are also explained in four steps. Similar cracks are obtained for the quasi-static and dynamic biaxial loading; however, the cause of failure is found to be contrasting.
