Abstract
In this article we analyze the linguistic and cultural policy of the German military authorities in the Belarusian district of the multiethnic and multilingual German occupation zone called „Ober Ost“ („Upper East“) during First World War (1915-1918). At that time the German military administration decided on equal treatment of all nationalities and languages of the occupied area, allowed and supported the public use of the local languages (Belarusian, Polish, Yiddish, Lithuanian) in civil administration, education system, print media and cultural events. In this way the Belarusian language gained official recognition by a foreign power for the first time.
