Summary

Introduction

Skin epidermis is made up of stratified epithelium. Stratification plays an important role during epidermal development. There is a balance between cell growth and cell death due to homeostasis, which plays a vital role in development and maintenance of multicellular organisms. Homeostasis is controlled by various molecular mechanisms including apoptosis. UVB irradiation generally causes DNA damage leading to activation of the intrinsic cell death pathway which includes mitochondrial damage and cytochrome c release in a receptor-independent way.
