Abstract

A new method for relating the laser frequency to the atomic resonance is described. The piezoelectric mirror mount of a He-Ne laser is fed by a DC and an AC voltage, high enough, so that the laser frequency is scanned over the width Δν of the line profile at threshold. The resulting emission may have a coherence length of the order of 2m. Frequency stability is approximately that of the natural spectral line.
