Abstract

This chapter looks at professional associations and trade unions and the roles they play in supporting teachers, particularly in the demanding political and social environment that is so much a part of being a teacher. In England, the inspection agency is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. In Northern Ireland it is the Education and Training Inspectorate; in Wales it is Estyn; and in Scotland, school inspections come under Education Scotland. The lives the learners bring to the classroom can also be a valuable learning tool for the teacher. One of the top tips from the newly qualified teachers tells us:Building relationships with students is important.
