Abstract

Despite the discovery of several hepatitis-related viruses, the cause of hepatitis infection in some 15% of cases continues to baffle physicians. Extensive international research efforts have been channelled into identifying and characterising causative agents other than the now-familiar hepatitis A-E viruses. The results of this research have led to more than one candidate. Details of the ‘new’ pathogens were presented at satellite symposia sponsored by Boehringer Mannheim and Abbott Diagnostics, at the 3rd International Meeting on Hepatitis C Virus and Related Viruses [Gold Coast, Australia; August 1995].
