Abstract

Throughout Kenyan history, there have been massive human rights abuses since the early 80’s especially after the 1982 attempted coup d’etat , and during election cycles thereafter. Gross violations at the Nyayo House Torture Chambers have been well documented. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was tortured there among other vocal opposition activists during the former President Daniel Moi’s dictatorship era. There were further incidents of ethnic violence, forced migrations, assassinations and arbitrary arrests. Massive killings during elections periods especially in 1992, 1997 and 2007. This paper looks at the work of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission in Kenya to find out what went wrong in Kenya.
