Abstract

The American Heritage Dictionary(1992:611) defines the as [a] philosophical movement of the eighteenth century that emphasized the use of reason to scrutinize previously accepted doctrines and traditions and that brought about many humanitarian reforms. This definition seems, in light of recent discussions on multiculturalism, not only inadequate but simple-minded. Even Immanuel Kant's impassioned characterization of the Enlightenment spirit as dare to know! is perceived to signal conflicts of interpretation rather than a straightforward assertion of human rationality.
