Abstract

We give a detailed derivation of the equation describing the height distribution of the vertical pressure in both cylindrical and conical vessels filled with granular material. It is surprising that for a convergent hopper, the vertical pressure can reach a maximum at some intermediate depth (the enhanced Janssen effect). The consideration of this problem will be useful for undergraduates, who study the statics of heterogeneous media.
