Abstract

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Republic of Korea (ROK)’s diplomatic relations date back to 18 June 1980. While the ROK-UAE relations were initially centered on the energy and construction sectors in the 1970s and 1980s, the ROK’s engagement with the UAE has been broadened in scope since the mid-2000s to encompass security and defense, food security, innovation and cultural exchanges. By analyzing the diplomatic history of the ROK-UAE bilateral relations, this essay examines the historical evolution of the ROK’s emergence as a middle-power state in the Middle East and discusses the ramifications for the nexus between domestic politics and foreign policy.
