Abstract

Conventional thinking on the subject of entrepreneurship is being quickly upended. Entrepreneurship studies is dynamic and evolving, as might be expected. I identify three relatively surprising observations in entrepreneurship: 1. Disruption is not the goal, at least initially. Your first objective is to create a monopoly. The authors describe how companies that start out with the immediate objective of disrupting the status quo often fail. The existing order will find a way to take you out if you are an immediate threat. Instead, companies like UBER and AirBNB strive to create a virtual monopoly where the disruption to the existing order is almost non-existent. 2. Inside or outside? Can entrepreneurs truly innovate from inside an existing firm? This article on entrepreneurship turns things around from the conventional mindset we hear from entrepreneurship gurus. 3. Which country is the most entrepreneurial? It is of course the United States right? After all, we have the most attractive markets in the world.
