Abstract

charles w. kegley jr is Professor of International Studies at the University of South Carolina, where he is chairman of the Department of Government and International Studies, eucene r. wittkopf is Visiting Professor of Political Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Professor of Political Science at the University of Florida. Among their co-authored works are American Foreign Policy: Pattern and Process (2nd ed; 1982) and World Politics: Trend and Transformation (1981). This paper is based in part on work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant ses-8o 14984. The data analysed were made available by the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (icpsr) and by Newsweek magazine via The Gallup Organization Inc and were gathered under the sponsorship of the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations and Newsweek.
