Abstract

Moving beyond behaviorism and neoliberalism in the classroom starts by recognizing how they have affected instructors and students in higher education. More specifically, this chapter describes how behaviorism affects both how instructors teach and how student learn. We take a closer look into how faculty members who do not move beyond behaviorism continue to be the holders of knowledge while students continue to regurgitate information without using inquiry, critical thinking, or problem-solving skills. This chapter seeks to discuss the importance of equity and social justice in higher education and how these two tenets are critical to the success of all students. Finally, this chapter provides applications of Engaged Pedagogy throughout, reinforcing why moving beyond behavioral-based teaching is not only warranted, but necessary to improve student engagement, performance, and experiences in higher education.
