Abstract

Human beings seek wild places to reflect upon ourselves and understand our place within creation. In outdoor sports, we experience the natural world through physical exertion as an expression of God’s majesty. This essay evaluates the ‘outdoor’ theologically as a spiritual discipline aimed at admiring the ‘beautiful book’ of nature, based on the experiences of students during a course, a theological exploration of Psalm 8, an aesthetic-doxological interpretation of the book metaphor, and the concept of resonance in Hartmut Rosa.
