Abstract

Scope of this study was to observe and evaluate effects on skin parameters of healthy women through oral treatment with stinging nettle and dandelion extracts. Ten female test persons (experimental group) were treated with Schoenenberger Heilpflanzensaften and simultaneously Basiscreme DAC for body care over a period of six weeks. The control group (10) used the Basiscreme DAC for body care only. Prior to the study skin parameters including pH-metry, corneometry, cutometry and profilometry were assessed on defined skin areas on the face and forearm. The measurements were repeated at weeks 1, 2, 4 and 6 of the study. In addition subjects were asked for their subjective evaluation over the same intervals. Skin hydration improved significantly after six weeks in the experimental group (p=0.05). Elasticity of skin increased significantly or at least improved clearly. No effects were found on pH-metry and profilometry. Subjective evaluation improved slightly after first week of treatment in the experimental group. After six weeks subjective evaluation was much better than in the control group which seemed to remain uneffected. This pilot study implies beneficial effects of stinging nettle and dandelion extracts on skin parameters.
