Abstract

This chapter examines the functioning of the kahal from the perspective of municipal politics, analysing the division of power between the nobility, the municipality, and the Jewish community. It explores the dependence of the kahal on the local municipal authorities and the way the contacts between these bodies worked in practice, how power and obligations were divided in the context of the government of the town, and how conflicts between the kahal and the town authorities were resolved. Here, Słuck (Slutsk) is taken as a case study. This town, located in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, was the home of a large Jewish community, which played a significant role in Jewish community life in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Above all, the chapter examines the actions of the Jewish community from the perspective of Christians — the municipality and the owner of the town.
