Abstract
This is really two books in one: an exposition of the case for surrogate parenthood by one who is well versed in its recent history and current controversies and a series of life stories of individuals (given pseudonyms) who have been surrogates. The narrative is written in a breezy style reminiscent of a novel or a Sunday newspaper supplement, interspersed with significant facts about the surrogate movement as it has evolved in this country during the past few years. The author is a lawyer and the medical-law project director of the American Bar Foundation and has been very much involved in this evolution herself, having testified in pertinent hearings and been a source person for committees active in the area. Her two previous books include a Consumer's Guide to the newer reproductive technologies and a book entitledMedical Genetics: A Legal Frontier. The author gives a reasonably balanced history
