Abstract
This chapter gives a brief overview of Plantin's life and says something about what is preserved of his correspondence. It illustrates with some examples from these letters how Plantin responded to the events of his time. Plantin managed to convince King Philip II to subsidize the printing of a new polyglot bible. This project resulted in the most impressive edition of the sixteenth century: the Biblia regia . Plantin was now famous throughout Europe. He printed or published 2,450 editions. When at the height of his career in the early 1570s, Plantin used sixteen presses, an astounding number for an Officina in sixteenth-century Europe. Philip II subvented his production of the Biblia regia and he was awarded a contract for the delivery of thousands of liturgical books for Spain.
