Abstract
The Linguistic Atlas of the Central Rhine Area (MRhSA), located at the University of Mainz, works with two demographically different data-series, which make it possible to combine methods of areal and social linguistics. Contrasts between the two data series are of no more than 6% on an average. The area thus shows a weak type of linguistic convergence towards standard German. In the variation space between standard German and base dialect, we observe the evolution of an attenuated dialect variety, which we may call a regional dialect. Nevertheless this relatively new regional dialect is not uniform over the area. There are subareas to be found with different degrees of dialectality
