Abstract

Hubei ranks first in the main rhizome lotus production provinces in China. The objectives of this research were to study the nutrient characteristics and the optimum nutrients management on rhizome lotus in the province. A series of pot culture experiments and field experiments were conducted in recent years. Results indicated that the accumulate proportion of N:P:K in rhizome lotus plant was 1:0.12:1.31. Rational N and K nutrition promoted the growth and development of standing-leaf, increased yield and improved quality of rhizome lotus. The content of lotus starch of +N treatment was 9 and 17% higher than that in N0 and +2N treatments, respectively. Starch content of +K treatment was higher than K0 treatment by 8%. Average fertilization rates of 360 kg ha-1 N, 90 kg ha-1 P2O5 and 270 kg ha-1 K2O with B and Zn fertilizers were recommended for rhizome lotus. Based on right rates, right sources and right place of fertilization, the N fertilization time strategy for lotus was recommended as: 40-60% for basal dressing +20% top-dressing in early June +20- 40% top-dressing in late June or early July. K fertilization time strategy was suggested as: 70% for basal dressing +30% top-dressing in late June or early July, or 50% basal dressing +20% top-dressing in early June + 30% top-dressing in late June or early July.
