Abstract

The year 2012 was one of the most memorable and successful sporting summers in British history. It was a personal milestone also as I had the privilege of representing Team Great Britain as a part of the Olympic bronze medal winning hockey team. Upon returning to life as a surgical trainee, I am occasionally asked how I reconciled my ‘‘double life’’ as an Olympian and doctor. I propose that the 2 fields share vastly more similarities than differences. Both reward values such as work ethic, honesty, and team work. Equally, there are barriers that are faced by those seeking success in either sport or surgical training. Striving to succeed despite pressures of time, resources, and competition—both athletes and surgeons in training will encounter these difficulties. Sports science seeks to produce excellence consistently and predictably, and it is my belief that some of these lessons can be applied by the trainee looking to achieve success in the surgical field of play.
