Abstract

The new, 2022, giant cell arteritis classification criteria1 from the American College of Rheumatology and European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (ACR–EULAR) represent substantial progress on the 1990 classification criteria and will underpin future scientific advancement in giant cell arteritis. Contrary to their stated use for classification of patients already diagnosed with primary systemic vasculitis, these criteria will inevitably (and unfortunately) be inappropriately used for diagnosis by some, even in the peer-reviewed literature,2 despite clear communication from the authors and sponsoring organisations about their intent.
