Abstract

Scaling factors relating dose distributions produced by plane sources of beta particles calculated by Monte Carlo simulation are compared with values predicted by the one-group theory. The variation with atomic number predicted by the theory was found to be stronger than that indicated by the Monte Carlo simulations. Agreement to within 0.5% could be achieved by using an effective scattering cross-section with a value equal to 42% of that predicted by theory. This result is consistent with recent scattering power measurements.
