Abstract

The chain length distribution of sulphonated surfactants was determined by high resolution capillary gas chromatography. Prior to analysis the sulphonate functionality was converted into the methyl ester derivative. Two methods of derivatisation were investigated and compared. The procedure was used for the major types of anionic surfactants including alkane sulphonate, alkylbenzene sulphonate and alpha-olefin sulphonate.
