Abstract
We often hear the term best practices used in software development contexts. It's easy to fall into the habit of using the term indiscriminately for any activity that looks even remotely useful. The editor in chief looks at the term's possible meanings, how it can affect computer forensics investigations, why he's restricting its use in IEEE Software, and how we might formalize a definition so that the term and concept can be useful to the community.
