Abstract

The following chapter will provide an overview of best practices for the assessment and treatment of mood disorders within the athlete population. Research related to the assessment of mood disorder symptomatology within the athlete will be presented. Evidenced-based intervention strategies from theoretical orientations including cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy will be introduced with an emphasis on how these approaches can be tailored to working with athletes. Specific issues related to treatment engagement with athletes diagnosed with mood disorders will be discussed as well as general recommendations. A table of keywords and intervention types will be provided at the conclusion of the chapter.
