Abstract

This paper details best practices for carbon dioxide (CO2) storage resource estimates in conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs associated with enhanced oil recovery (EOR) via CO2 flooding (CO2 EOR). The recommendations are based on U.S. Department of Energy-funded research through the Energy & Environmental Research Center using real-world applications and robust numerical simulations, which have led to a better understanding of factors that control CO2 storage in CO2 EOR fields. The approaches outlined in this presentation recognize that the accuracy of the CO2 storage resource estimate for a particular reservoir is directly proportional to the state of knowledge at any given point in time. To accommodate this reality, workflows are presented that guide the user through a series of decision points that help to determine which CO2 storage resource-estimating method is best for a particular situation.
