Abstract

In many senses best practice in sports museums and sport in the wider museums sector is no different to that for museums as a whole. It should follow the definition of museums and codes of conduct provided by the appropriate professional body. However, there are some specificities to sports museums and sport in museums, which can guide best practice, which will be discussed in this chapter. This includes a consideration of the definition of a sports museum, particularly in relation to a hall of fame. The specifics of key aspects of museum practice in sports museums are then considered, including collecting policies; research; interpretation; audience development; and the role of a ‘hall of fame’ in a sports museum.
