Abstract

The 12th edition of Best and Taylor's Physiological Basis of Medical Practice is again edited by Dr John B. West, professor of physiology and medicine, University of California, San Diego. This edition is shorter than the previous edition by 170 pages (13%). The whole textbook is more accessible. The gastrointestinal section has been completely rewritten by the new editor, Stephen J. Pandol, MD. Parts of other sections are totally or partially rewritten or improved, such as those on respiration, properties and functions of cell membranes, excitation and contraction of skeletal muscle, the cardiovascular system, and the endocrine system. This edition continues to focus on the clinical relevance of physiology without neglecting the importance of presenting in-depth relevant scientific information. The text has nine sections, including the above-mentioned and general physiological processes, blood, body fluids and renal function, metabolism, and neurophysiology.
