Abstract

On basis of the typical course of the season in olympic wintersports, 3 characteristical situations are described and their effects on the way of nutrition are discussed: 1) Intense training periods on glaciers during summer: With the example of alpine skiing it is shown that the high energy needs can hardly be covered by the nutrition usually served in training camps. Additional meals have to be organized and it has to be taken care of an adequate supply with food and drink during and after training sessions. 2) The long competition period from November to March: Due to the packed competition calendar the athletes have to travel a lot which makes it hard to cover their nutritional needs. 3) Exposure to cold weather conditions for many hours especially at competition days: Exposure to cold weather has influence on the intake of food and drink. Nutrition has to comply with the needs for warm meals and drinks, which in practice often can be only managed by instant products.
