Abstract

Compared to other commonly used monochromator materials, beryllium single crystals give a considerable higher intensity of the monochromatic beam for neutrons with a wavelength between 0.07 to 0.3 nm. For this reason it is necessary to produce single crystals without subgrains and with a low defect concentration. To date, attempts to grow such crystals have failed. In this treatise the neutron scattering properties and the crystallisation behavior of beryllium is discussed. In addition, possible future developments in the field are reviewed.
