Abstract

In this paper we have derived the general dispersion relation for electrostatic waves in bismuth in the presence of a static magnetic field along the trigonal axis by solving the Vlasov equation for electrons and holes. The effect of many-valley band structure, anisotropy in the carrier mass, and degeneracy in the distribution function are incorporated. The dispersion relation is explicitly solved for Berstein waves. In the limit of negligible degeneracy, the dispersion relation resembles very closely to the one in gaseous plasmas.
