Abstract

Abstract The isostructural compounds (MC4O4·2 H2O)3·CH3COOH·H2O (M=Zn2+,Mn2+) crystallize in the triclinic space group P1̄, if grown in solution of high ionic strength. The structural features are similar to those in the cubic phase. Correspondingly CH3COOH·H2O can be trapped in cage like cavities, formed by the 3-dimensional framework o f M2+ and C4O4 2- . The metal ions are coordinated in a distorted octahedral fashion. The squarate dianions act as four-fold monodentate ligands.
