Abstract

The IR and Raman spectra of the following compounds have been measured: Cu 3VS 4, Cu 3NbS 4, Cu 3TaS 4, Cu 3VSe 4, Cu 3NbSe 4 and Cu 3 TaSe 4. An assignment of the frequencies and a comparison with the spectra and structural data of the T1 3MX 4 type compounds (M = V, Nb, Ta; X = S, Se) are reported. It is interesting to note that, contrary to the thallium compounds, the copper compounds can be treated as salts only to a limited extent in the usual definition of salts, because of relatively strong Cu-S and Cu-Se bonds, respectively. v(CuS) and v(CuSe) could be observed in the spectra. The nature of the Cu-S and Cu-Se bonds is found to be alike in similar compounds.
