Abstract

This paper presents the results of an archaeological survey at the site of Berdysyčran-depe located 13 km east of the Tedjen river, south of the modern Tedjen delta in southern Turkmenistan. The site consists of two mounds of different sizes and heights and a flat area surrounding them which together cover approximately 15 ha. The surface survey conducted by the authors revealed that both the mounds have been simultaneously occupied in the Middle and Late Bronze Age (Namazga V and Namazga VI in the Central Asian chronology) and was probably an important site of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC) that developed in southern Central Asia during that time. The discovery of the site changes our picture of the extent of the BMAC, indicating that the lower Tedjen river valley also was a part of its territory.
