Abstract

The present work reports on pH measurements at anion-exchange membranes (AEM) in an electrodialysis cell. The measurements were carried out by a special bismuth electrode. The cell was +Pt/HNO 3/AEM/NaOH/Pt−. If electrolytic current flows, strongly alkaline layers are formed at the anodic side of membrane. The pH of these layers were investigated as to their dependence on cd, acid concentration, stirring and concentration of fixed ions. One can calculate from the measurements the thickness of the diffusion layer in agreement with known values. Optimal conditions of electrodialysis for the preparation of β-sources for nuclear physical purposes are suggested.
