Abstract

In A. P. Chekhov's play Three Sisters the concept of time is crucial to the meaning of the text. This concept has undergone dramatic changes in philosophical and especially scientific theories at the turn of the 19 th to the 20 th century. Therefore this essay focuses on the relations between text and context, foregrounding the so called Fourth Dimension and its impact on Chekhov's play. On this basis, it is possible to compare Chekhov's writing with that of the Russian Symbolists because they share the same historical background.
