Abstract

The mortality surface is discussed and some possibilities of its representation, graduation and extrapolation are shown. The author has attempted to transform the period tables into generation tables by means of age shift, adding a constant, multiplying by a factor or the possible combinations of these. For analytical surfaces the functional equation corresponding to the linear transformation is solved. There exist only quadric and Makeham surfaces. The other cases seem to be very complicated and consequently only certain special examples are given. In the numerical part the extrapolated generation tables of the Swiss male population are approximated by the period table 1958/63 according to the different methods stated above.
