Abstract

In the present paper strong evidence is presented that some diatoms e. g.Donkinia carinata, Gyrosigma rectum, Pleurosigma angulatum, Amphora spec., are motile also in plasmolyzed state provided the raphe is the negative location of plasmolysis. Thus the existence of the turgor is not a condition for locomotion, in contrast to the theory ofO. Mueller. 1(-)histidine does not accelerate the movement. The transport of carmine particles along the raphe depends on the same force as the locomotion, but there is no evidence that a protoplasmic streaming is the effective force. These findings suggest a re-evaluation of the role of protoplasmic streaming in the movement of diatoms.
