Abstract
Reaction of hexamethylbenzene, aluminium chloride, and aluminium powder with metal chlorides of IVth and Vth group transition metals in the molten state yielded new a-hexamethylbenzene-chloro-metal complexes; brown, diamagnetic Nb 2[C 6(CH 3) 6] 3Cl 1; green, diamagnetic {Nb 3[C 6(CH 3) 6] 3Cl 6}Cl; brown, diamagnetic {Ta 3[C 6(CH 3) 6] 2Cl 6}Cl; violet, paramagnetic {Ti 3[C 6(CH 3) 6] 3Cl 6}Cl; and brown, paramagnetic {Zr 3[C 6(CH 3) 6] 3Cl 6}Cl. IR and NMR data are reported. Structures are proposed on the basis of magnetic measurements and molecular weight determinations.
