Abstract

SummaryA method for the determination of the potassium content of the erythrocytes is presented. Its application to patients with renal disease, hepatic cirrhosis or colitis, shows a constant decrease in intracorpuscular potassium concentration despite normal plasma potassium levels. In congestive heart failure, and especially in cor pulmonale, red blood cell potassium concentration is slightly increased. This simple method is useful for detection of potassium deficit in patients with normal plasma potassium level.
