Abstract

The generic name Heterotheca was first published by Cassini (1817) for an extant member of the Asteraceae. Heterotheca Benson (1922) was described as an anatomically preserved pollen organ attributed to the Paleozoic seed fern Heteran,gim1. According to Article 64 of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (Stafleu, 1978) the generic name Heterotheca Benson is a later homonym and therefore must be rejected as illegitimate. We therefore propose that the name of the lyginopterid pollen organ be changed from Heterotheca to Bensoniotheca and institute a name transfer for the single species in this genus. The generic diagnosis and specific description remain unchanged.
