Abstract

The two best known Prime Ministers of the nineteenth century were probably Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone. They were notable opponents, and very dissimilar characters, but they had one thing in common — both of them switched their party affiliation. Gladstone started off as a Tory, but went on to become the most distinguished of Liberal Prime Ministers. Disraeli launched his political career as an ‘Independent Radical’, but it was as a Conservative that he achieved fame and fortune, and he is still revered today as one of the party’s most formative influences.KeywordsPrime MinisterParty AffiliationLiberal PartyConservative PartyMinority GovernmentThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
