Abstract
To the Editor.— We were very interested in the article by Elpern et al 1 in the October 1985Archivesconcerning a new photodermatosis called papulovesicular light eruption . A computer analysis of a multicentric study of 193 photodermatoses 2 enabled us to determine a new entity, for which the term benign summer light eruption (BSLE), or lucite estivale benigne , has been suggested. This photodermatosis, which seems to be different from polymorphous light eruption (PMLE), essentially affects young (20- to 35-year-old) women (only 14% of the patients are men). It appears during the second or third day following an intensive sun exposure, such as sunbathing. The rash itches and is predominantly located on sun-exposed areas, such as the chest, the upper part of the back, the shoulders, the outer aspect of the arms, and the dorsum of the hands and feet; in contrast to PMLE, the face is usually spared.
