Abstract

The complexity of indoor and especially outdoor environments still compromises the independence of the visually impaired is still compromised, mainly by the complexity of indoor and especially outdoor environments, as found in city centers. , mainly, as found in city centers. Many tools have already been designed to assist the visually impaired, however, many of these approaches are ineffective with some tall obstacles above the user’s waist, such as the common cane. Through exploratory research methods and component implementations, the aim of this work was to create a system that can identify obstacles that the traditional cane cannot detect. Thus, an electronic cane was developed that maintains the formal structure of the cane for acceptance by the target audience but can emit audible and vibrating alarms related to distance obstacles detected by ultrasonic sensors. Satisfactory results were obtained through tests with the electronic cane, mainly for obstacles less than 80 centimeters apart. Furthermore, the cane was implemented with low-cost components.
