Abstract

This study evaluates the benefits of a health screening programme among the elderly in a rural district in Norway. The study was based on a random sample of persons aged 68 years or more. Among the 101 screened individuals 18 previously unknown health problems of importance were disclosed. Of these, the diagnosis of four cases (glaucoma simplex) were considered to be of major importance. The results of the study indicate that periodic health screening of all the elderly is hardly justified in districts with well organized and adequately staffed health services to meet the populations daily needs and demands. Such a screening programme, however, will be beneficial to the elderly who seldom or never consult a physician.
