Abstract

Purpose: Meniscal tears are critical problems in sports medicine that may lead to OA, and none of the current treatments can reliably heal such lesions. Gene therapy using clinically adapted recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors has strong potential to enhance the repair of meniscal tears. Here, we examined whether rAAV can overexpress the basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) via alginate hydrogel-guided gene vector delivery in primary human meniscal fibrochondrocytes as an innovative, off-the-shelf system to improve meniscal repair.
