Abstract
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was created in 1993 to control and develop the Tennessee River and to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the inhabitants of the region. The major tools TVA has used to meet its responsibilities are flood control, navigation and hydroelectric power production. Floods are minimized by the operation of 47 dams and reservoirs, navigation is continuing to expand along the 1050-km channel, and electric power is supplied to some 8 million people and 47 very large industrial users. Agriculture, soil, forest, wildlife, fisheries, aesthetic and archaeological resources have been conserved and enhanced with concurrent and significant advances in industry, population, service organizations, recreation, education, health and personal income. The integrated development of the Tennessee Valley region is deemed a remarkable success.
